Wilton High rowers attend Head of the Charles Regatta

Fifteen Wilton High School rowers headed to Boston over the weekend of Oct. 22-23 to compete in the 52nd Head of the Charles Regatta with their fellow boat mates from the Norwalk River Rowing Association.

The team of 19 will join 11,000 competitors from more than 800 universities, colleges, and schools to race at the two-day regatta, the largest of its kind in the world.

Coached by Drew Combs, the NRRA girls Women's Youth Four (four rowers with one oar each, plus a coxswain) placed 17th. The team was made up of Victoria Markow (Norwalk), Olivia Bernardini (Wilton), Mackenzie Cote (Wilton), Mackenzie Holmgren (Wilton and Lucy Angus (Norwalk).

The NRRA boys, coached by Yuri Kolomiets, raced two events.

In the Men's Youth Double (two rowers with two oars each), Oliver Peacock and Kevin Lenihan, both from Wilton placed eighth.

In the Men's Youth Eight (eight rowers, one oar each, plus a coxswain), all eight oarsmen were from Wilton — Ethan Reichgut, James Trentos, Liam Jenkins, Jackson Cote, Matt Rauccio, Brad Spiewak, Ryan Purdy and Ben Hufnagel. They were steered down the three-mile course by Bo Pollio of Darien.

Bella Fox of Wilton was the coxswain for the Women's Senior Master Four, leading four adult members of the rowing club.

Two spare rowers also made the trip to Boston — Griffen Leica (Wilton) and Ian Trostle (Pound Ridge, N.Y.).
