Knutson, Maccio help state team win regional soccer championship
Two Wilton girls were members of the U-18 Connecticut FC team that won the Connecticut State Cup in June and then went on to win the U.S. Youth Soccer Region 1 championship title in early July in Kingston, R.I.
The hand-picked, all-star team was comprised of players from each of Connecticut FC’s United ECNL teams, age levels U-15 to U-18.
Lindsay Knutson, a rising senior at Wilton High School who is committed to play Division I soccer at Dartmouth College, and Jayne Maccio, a rising junior and Division I college recruit, battled hard with their teammates to emerge victorious in the group stage by beating the nation’s top-ranked team, New Jersey’s PDA, and the nation’s eighth-ranked team, Frederick, MD.
In the finals, their team notched a 1-0 victory over the five-time regional champion and ECNL U-18 powerhouse, Scorpions of Massachusetts.
The win secured them a ticket to Overland Park, Kansas, to play for the national championship with the winners from the nation’s three other regions.
Both Knutson and Maccio are co-captains of this fall’s WHS varsity girls soccer team.
