Amelia Hughes of Wilton and her partner, Madeleine Wilson of New Canaan, are the national champions in the 12 & under division in platform tennis.

The girls won the 2016 American Platform Tennis Association (APTA) Junior National Championship tournament last Saturday in Short Hills, N.J. More than 150 players comprising 77 teams competed at the event.

The girls faced their toughest competition of the season at the tournament but ended up winning in the finals, 6-4, 7-5, against a strong team from Philadelphia.

Earlier in the season, the girls won their third straight Connecticut state title and handily won the Indian Hills Trail Club Junior Ranking Open without losing a set.

With their win at nationals, the girls have guaranteed themselves the number-one national ranking for the season.
