Wrestling: Warriors nip McMahon, 40-39
The Wilton High wrestling team got a pin by Quinn Reedy in the 132-pound match, the final match of the day, to pull out a 40-39 win over Brien McMahon on Wednesday at home.
The Warriors went into the match down by five points, 39-34, before Reedy's pin supplied the needed six points to gain the win in the overall match.
Wilton, which improved its season record to 3-6, also got wins via pin from Travis Long (106 pounds), Nick Rende (120 pounds), Zach Zeyher (160 pounds) and Jared Gladstein (182 pounds).
The Warriors got a win by major decision from Matt Beck at 152 pounds, while Finn McGovern won by forfeit at 113 pounds.
Wilton also competed at the McDougall Duals last week at Trumbull High School, going 1-4 against five other teams.
The Warriors' lone win came against the combined team from Platt Tech and West Haven — a 48-6 victory.
The team lost to Fairfield Ludlowe, 56-21; Notre Dame-Fairfield, 45-39; Westhill, 47-27; and Trumbull, 50-6.
Gladstein led the way for Wilton with a perfect 5-0 day at 195 pounds.
Rende (113 pounds), McGovern (106 pounds) and Alec Favarolo (138 pounds) were all 4-1 on the day, while Beck was 2-0 at 170 pounds. Rende, a sophomore, suffered his first loss of the season, losing to junior Tristan Haviland of Trumbull, last year's FCIAC runner-up, in a tough 6-4 decision.
Zeyher, a sophomore, was 3-2 at the tournament at 160 pounds, with two very close losses to very tough opponents — including an 8-7 overtime loss to senior Joe Ryan of Trumbull, the FCIAC champ at 170 pounds last year.
