The Wilton High wrestling team had three wrestlers reach the consolation semifinals the Ridgefield Challenge tournament on Jan. 31.
Nick Rende and Steffan Nobles both went 3-2 at the tourney, while Quinn Reedy was 2-2.
Rende, wrestling at 106 pounds, opened with an 8-0 major decision over Sammy Keylock of Amity, before losing a close 7-5 decision to Justin Crawford of St. Anthony’s, N.Y. In the wrestlebacks, he pinned Greenwich’s Dylan Ehret of Greenwich (in 3:40) and defeated Thomas Leuci of Newtown, 2-0, before losing to Jarod Kosman of Fitch in consolation semifinals, 4-0.
Nobles wrestling at 195 pounds, pinned Zach Higham of Coventry (in 2:41) in the first round, before losing by pin to the eventual champ, Nick McShane of Monroe Woodbury, N.Y., in 1:44. In the consolation bracket, he had two pins, over Mike Guzman of Bristol Central (1:15) and Lucian Metelski of Stamford (1:15), before losing by pin (1:28) to Andy Hubina of Newtown in the consolation semifinals.
Reedy, at 126 pounds, lost his first match to the eventual champ, Ben Lamantia of St. Anthony’s, 15-0. He battled back with a 4-2 decision over Ridgefield’s Bobby Philbin and 14-5 win over Nick Lambert of Coventry, R.I., before losing by pin (3:50) to Kevin Kelly of Monroe Woodbury, in the consolation semifinals.
Also notching wins at the tourney were Will McArdle, Harry Winrow and Zach Zeyher
Winrow, wrestling at 145 pounds, finished the day with a 2-2 record. In the first round, he pinned Grant Frederick of John Jay East Fishkill, N.Y., in 2:30 — the only loss of the day for Frederick, the eventual third-place finisher. After being pinned by Ridgefield’s Dylan Chelednik (in 5:59), Winrow won his first wrestleback match with an 11-7 decision over Colin Metcalf of Coventry, before being pinned (2:11) by Shane Smith of Monroe Woodbury.
At 138 pounds, McArdle was 1-2. He lost by pin in the first round to Matt Bracco of Monroe Woodbury, and then scored a 4-1 decision over Michael Lagrange of Fairfield Prep, before losing by pin to Jeremy Miller of St. Anthony’s.
Zeyher, a freshman, wrestled at 152 pounds. He lost by pin to Joe Accousti of Newtown in his first match, in 1:27, before pinning Ethan Irvan of Fitch in 2:18 for his first varsity win. He lost a tough 7-6 decision to Alec Shilstone of Ridgefield in his final match.
The Warriors finished tied for 12th with 30 points.
Notes: The Warriors also suffered a 77-6 loss at Fairfield Warde last Thursday. Warde, the fourth-ranked team in the state, improved to 16-1.
Rende accounted for Wilton’s scoring with a pin of Bender Warde, in 2:23, in the 106-pound bout.
