Wilton tops Ludlowe, 5-1, in FCIAC quarterfinals
The start of the postseason didn't slow down the Wilton High girls tennis team.
Seeded third, the Warriors defeated sixth-seed Fairfield Ludlowe, 5-1, in a conference quarterfinal match Tuesday in Wilton.
The victory was the 11th straight for Wilton, which now plays second-seed Darien in the semifinals on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Darien High School. If the Warriors win that match they will enjoy a home-court advantage: The FCIAC finals take place Monday afternoon (4 p.m.) at Wilton High School.
In Tuesday's quarterfinal contest, the Warriors won three-of-four singles matches and both doubles matches that were completed.
Wilton got 6-0, 6-0 triumphs from Izzy Koziol at first singles and Emma Caldwell at second singles. Freshman Rhea Raghavan added a 6-0, 2-6, 12-10 victory at fourth singles, taking the third set in a 10-point tiebreaker.
Arden Lee and Amber Li contributed a 6-0, 6-4 win at first doubles for the Warriors, and Gerri Fox and Grace Cahill prevailed 6-3, 6-0 at second doubles.
Wilton's third-doubles team of Katie Seelert and Mackenzie McCormick was ahead 7-5, 6-5 when rain suspended play.
The Warriors now turn their focus to Darien.
"Everyone is excited/hungry to get another chance at Darien this Thursday," said Wilton head coach Rod-Djaly Thoby, whose team is now 16-2 this year. "We lost against them in a close match (4-3) during the regular season. It’s going to be a battle on both sides."
