Wilton softball team tops Harding for second straight win

After losing its first 11 games, the Wilton High softball team is now on a two-game winning streak.

The Warriors defeated host Bridgeport Central, 5-2, last Friday for their first win of the year. Then on Monday, at home, Wilton run-ruled the Harding Presidents, 17-3, in five innings for its second victory.

In Monday’s contest, the Warriors pushed seven runs across the plate in the bottom of the first and seven more in the fourth to end the game after five innings.

With one out in the bottom of the first, Nicole Amato singled, Lizette Roman-Johnston doubled, and then Sage Zunda singled home Amato for the first run of the game. The Warriors then picked up three runs on a passed ball and two Harding errors. Annabelle Wert singled home the fifth run of the inning, and two more runs scored on passed balls. The Wilton rally was aided by four walks by the Harding pitcher.

The Warriors picked up a single run in the second inning for an 8-0 lead after two. Ally Rauccio opened the inning with a double and came around to score on a Julia Schiavone single.

Wilton starting pitcher Zunda, who retired the first six batters in order in the first two innings, got herself in trouble in the third. Harding scored two runs on two hits and three walks to cut the Wilton lead to 8-2.

Not for long, though. Wilton answered in the bottom of the inning with two runs of its own for a 10-2 lead. The two runs came without the help of a hit. Schiavone got another RBI with a sacrifice fly, and the second run scored on a passed ball.

Wilton (2-11) put the game away in the bottom of the fourth with seven runs. The first two Warrior batters of the inning walked. Wert and Eliza Ward then singled home runs, and Roman-Johnston doubled in two more. Wilton got two additional runs on bases-loaded walks and third run on a passed ball.

Harding (1-12) scored a single run in the top of the fifth on one hit.
