Wilton skiers impress at opener
The Wilton High boys and girls ski teams began the 2019 season with solid performances last Wednesday at Mount Southington.
Competing head-to-head against Joel Barlow, Guilford, Southington, and Weston, the Wilton girls team went 2-2. The Warriors had a team score of 316.08, beating Barlow (322.56) and Guilford (373.82) but losing to Weston (311.05) and Southington (313.08).
Wilton was fourth overall among the 12 teams competing.
Wilton did have the individual winner as sophomore Kira Howard was first overall with a two-run combined time of 46.92 seconds. Howard was nearly a second faster than second-place finisher Riley Peters of Ridgefield (47.63).
Senior co-captain Emily O'Brien was Wilton’s second finisher, placing 21st overall in a time of 51.74 seconds. Close behind was freshman Sophia Polito, who was 23rd overall in 52.39.
Senior co-captain Hope Ullman (54.6), sophomore Alexandra Magnusson (55.16), and senior co-captain Emily Welch (55.27) also contributed to Wilton’s team score.
Facing the same head-to-head opponents, the Wilton boys went 3-1 with a team time of 302.07. The Warriors defeated Weston (307.43), Barlow (315.73), and Guilford (348.65) but lost to Southington (297.92).
Wilton was fifth overall among the 14 teams racing.
Sophomore Ryan van Heyst led the Warriors with a seventh-place overall finish in a combined time of 48.30 seconds.
Senior co-captain August Theoharides also finished in the top-20 overall for Wilton, placing 17th in a time of 49.40 seconds.
Also contributing to Wilton’s team time were junior Dominick Polito (50.28), seniors Philip Klinga (50.72) and Scott Verrilli (51.12), and junior Ben Leung (52.25).
