Wilton ski team returns to slopes in winning fashion

After having two meets postponed last week, the Wilton High ski teams were back on the slopes Monday at Mount Southington, competing in the race rescheduled from last Tuesday.

The Wilton boys were up against six opponents in head-to-head matches and defeated four of them. The Warriors’ team time of 298.25 seconds gave them wins over New Canaan (303.50), Darien (314.52), Brunswick (disqualified) and St. Luke’s (disqualified). Wilton lost to Fairfield Prep (276.95) and Fairfield (291.28).

Zach Verrilli was Wilton’s top finisher, placing 14th overall in a two-run combined time of 46.96 seconds.

August Theoharides (25th, 48.64), Michael Hueglin (31st, 49.30), Josh Reeve (41st, 50.49), Tim Sullivan (42nd, 50.87), and Tom Sullivan (52nd, 51.99) also contributed to Wilton’s team score.

The Wilton girls team compiled a team time of 302.89 seconds to split its four head-to-head meets. The Warriors got victories over Lauralton Hall (345.47) and St. Luke’s (disqualified) but lost to Darien (293.09) and Fairfield (299.82).

Haley Howard and Genevieve Poirier gave Wilton two of the top-10 overall finishers. Howard was second in a two-run combined time of 47.49 seconds, and Poirier placed eighth in a time of 48.79 seconds.

Julia Bonnist added a top-15 finish for the Warriors, as she was 15th in a time of 50.08 seconds.

Wilton’s three other scoring skiers were all in the top-25 overall. Emily O’Brien finished 21st (52.03), Devon Thompson was 22nd (52.06) and Hannah Jung placed 24th (52.44).

Two more Warriors were in the top-30 overall, as Kaylin Kieffer finished 26th (52.55) and Emma Fortuna was 28th (52.75).
