Wilton girls ski team clinches conference title

By sweeping its three head-to-head opponents at the final regular-season race of the season, the Wilton High girls ski team clinched the Connecticut Interscholastic Ski League’s Conference S title on Monday at Mount Southington.

The Warriors, who improved their overall record to 17-2, finished the regular season unbeaten against other conference teams.

In Monday’s race, the Wilton girls had a team time of 277.84 seconds to defeat Greenwich (288.58), Amity (320.73) and Litchfield (disqualified). The Warriors were also first overall among all 12 teams competing.

Wilton had three of the top-10 overall finishers, led by Haley Howard, who was second in a two-run combined time of 44.27 seconds. Angele Poirier (45.54) was eighth and Genevieve Poirier (45.92) 10th in the field of 101 skiers.

Also contributing to Wilton’s team time were CC Babchak (13th, 46.50), Hannah Sullivan (21st, 47.77) and Margaret May (22nd, 47.84).

In their final regular-season race, the Wilton boys had a team time of 273.12 seconds to beat Amity (291.14) and Litchfield (320.35) but lose to Greenwich (271.00).

Wilton ended the regular season with a 17-8 overall record.

Roger Hueglin had a top-10 overall finish for the Warriors, placing eighth in a two-run time of 43.31 seconds.

Will Howard (15th, 44.05) and Zach Verrelli (21st, 45.29) also finished in the top-25 overall for Wilton.

Rounding out the team time contributors were Emmanuel Sitinas (31st, 45.94), Jody Underwood (40th, 46.67) and Josh Reeve (48th, 47.86).

Notes: The Wilton teams will conclude the season at the State Open championship meet on March 5 at Mount Southington. The race begins at 2 p.m.
