Wilton girls hoop team overtakes Tigers

The Wilton High girls basketball team outscored Ridgefield, 35-17, in the second half to rally for a 56-43 win Wednesday evening at the Zeoli Field House.

The Warriors trailed 26-21 at halftime, but took a 41-36 lead after three quarters, outscoring Ridgefield, 20-10, in the third period.

When Erin Cunningham drained her second consecutive three-pointer on back-to back trips down the floor, it gave the Warriors a 36-34 lead — a lead that would continue to grow until the final buzzer sounded.

“We were down at the half against Fairfield Ludlowe (a season-opening loss last week), so we made sure we came out in the second half and got the win,” said Cunningham.

Wilton outscored the visitors, 15-7, in the fourth quarter to cruise to its third straight win.

The Warriors had four players with double-digit scoring, led by 18 points from Cunningham. Haley English chipped in with 14 points, and Erica Meyer and Karen Brosko added 10 points each. Cunningham and English each scored 13 points in the second half.

Cunningham, who got into early foul trouble and sat out the entire second quarter, finished with four three-pointers. All of Meyer’s points came from the foul line as she hit 10 of 14 free throws.

As a team, Wilton was 20 of 30 from the line.

Rebecca Lawrence had 16 points for the Tigers, who fell to 2-1.
