Wilton girls fourth at state ski championships

With two skiers placing in the top-10 overall, the Wilton High girls ski team ended its season with a strong fourth-place finish at the State Open championship race Tuesday at Mount Southington.

The Warriors had a team time of 288.53 seconds to finish behind Fairfield (287.19), Staples (287.96) and Darien (288.33), as the top-four were separated by less than two seconds. It was the fourth consecutive state championship for the Fairfield combined squad, which includes skiers from Fairfield Warde and Fairfield Ludlowe.

Wilton senior Haley Howard came close to winning the girls individual title. Howard had a two-run combined time of 44.39 seconds to finish just behind Westbrook's Anna Schneider, who was first overall in 44.35.

Schneider, who was competing as an individual, opened a slight lead on the first run, as her time of 22.45 seconds bettered Howard's 22.57.  Howard closed the gap by skiing faster on her second run (21.82) than did Schneider (21.90), but the margin wasn't enough to overtake Schneider.

Fellow Wilton senior Genevieve Poirier was ninth overall in the field of 127 skiers with a two-run time of 46.23 seconds.

Julia Bonnist (32nd, 48.60), Kailyn Kieffer (48th, 45.97), Emily O'Brien (49th, 49.76), and Emma Fortuna (54th, 49.98) also contributed to Wilton's team time.

The Wilton boys team also qualified for the state championship and finished 10th with a time of 286.77 seconds.

Freshman August Theoharides had Wilton's best individual finish, placing 49th overall in a two-run combined time of 47.11 seconds.

Teammate Griffin Klinga was close behind, as he was 53rd overall in 47.26 seconds.

Also having their times count toward Wilton's total were Michael Hueglin (58th, 47.47), Patrick Verrilli (60th, 47.53), Mike Logiurto (84th, 48.62), and Nathan Reznik (85th, 48.78).

Notes: Fairfield Prep won the boys team championship with a time of 265.93 seconds. Two-time defending state champion Greenwich (271.44) finished second.

Paul Williams of Greenwich was the fastest individual skier with a two-run time of 42.21 seconds.

Wilton's top boys skier, senior Zach Verrilli, fell on his first run and was disqualified.
