Wilton girls fifth, boys ninth at State Open skiing

The Wilton girls team finished fifth and the Wilton boys were ninth at the State Open ski championships Monday at Mount Southington.

The Wilton girls had a team time of 336.04 seconds to finish behind Fairfield (317.50), Ridgefield (325.52), Cheshire (332.56), and Greenwich (335.11).

CC Babchak put together two strong runs to lead the Warriors and place fifth overall in the girls individual standings with a combined time of 51.79 seconds.

Julia Bonnist also finished in the top-20 overall for Wilton, as she was 17th in a two-run time of 53.15 seconds.

Wilton's top skier, Haley Howard, fell during her first run and was disqualified. Howard had finished either first or second overall in all five of the Warriors' regular-season meets.

In the boys State Open championship, Wilton was ninth with a time of 330.81 seconds.

Greenwich (313.32) finished first, with Fairfield Prep (315.48) second and Staples (319.28) third.

Will Howard was Wilton's first finisher, tying for 17th overall in a two-run time of 52.84 seconds.

Teammate Zach Verrelli also cracked the top 30, finishing 27th overall in a time of 53.44 seconds.
