Wilton fourth at Class L state swim championship

The Wilton High girls swim team moved up one spot from last season — and came close to making it two spots.

Wilton scored 564 points to finish fourth at the Class L state championship meet Wednesday night at Wesleyan University in Middletown, placing ahead of Pomperaug (462.5 points). At last year's Class L meet, Pomperaug finished fourth and Wilton was fifth.

The Warriors also came close to catching Cheshire (576.5 points) for third place Wednesday night. The Rams, who finished third for the second straight season, had outscored Wilton by 70 points last year.

There was no change at the top of the standings, as Darien won the Class L title for the sixth consecutive season and New Canaan was the runner-up for the sixth consecutive season. The Blue Wave had 863 points to easily outdistance second-place New Canaan (712.50 points).

For Wilton, Katrina Trentos, Emma Kauffeld and Emma Holmquist each had two top-five finishes in individual events. Trentos led the way with a third-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (5:07.89) and also placed fifth in the 100 backstroke (59.68). Kauffeld was fourth — one spot behind Trentos — in the 500 freestyle (5:07.89) and fifth in the 200 freestyle (1:56.87), while Holmquist finished fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:09.05) and fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.21).

Two other Warriors competed in championship heats (top eight in each event at trials) Wednesday night. Brooke Hendee placed eighth in the 200 IM (2:13.74), and Morgan Dill was eighth in the 50 freestyle (25.48).

All three Wilton relays also placed in the top eight. Dill, Taylor Loud, Holmquist and Kauffeld were fifth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:40.76); Loud, Kauffeld, Emily Walden and Holmquist were fifth in the 400 freestyle relay (3:36.69); and Trentos, Hendee, Natalie Larsen and NoraNoel Nolan were sixth in the 200 medley relay (1:53.87).

Adding points with top-24 finishes for the Warriors were Walden (11th, 2:00.69), Brooke Kelly (15th, 2:02.25) and Megan Lafond (23rd, 2:05.94) in the 200 freestyle; Nolan (14th, 2:16.17) and Larsen (15th, 2:16.67) in the 200 IM; Loud in the 50 freestyle (10th, 25.52); Arisa Cowe (ninth, 1:00.12), Larsen (12th, 1:00.91), Lily Kealy (23rd, 1:05.41) and Grace Schaller (24th, 1:05.66) in the 100 butterfly; Loud (10th, 55.26), Walden (18th, 56.39) and Dill (19th, 56.47) in the 100 freestyle; Lafond (22nd, 5:38.74) and Cowe (23rd, 5:41.52) in the 500 freestyle; Kelly (20th, 1:04.50) and Elizabeth Cramer (24th, 1:07.33) in the 100 backstroke; and Hendee (ninth, 1:08.91), Liela Hastings (18th, 1:12.10) and Kathryn Cunningham (23rd, 1:14.07) in the 100 breaststroke.
