Wilton boys lacrosse team tops Norwalk in opener

The Wilton High boys lacrosse team opened its 2014 season with a 15-7 victory over Norwalk at Fujitani Field on Wednesday night under the lights.

The Warriors put together a 6-0 run late in the third quarter that carried over into the fourth quarter, breaking open a close game en route to the win.

Wilton got on the board first, with a goal by Will Garbus, assisted by Dan Baird, just two minutes and one second into the contest.

Norwalk tied the game at 1-1 with 4:29 left in the first quarter on a defensive lapse by the Warriors, but Wilton answered right back with scores by Michael Lynch, RJ Romeo and Baird in the final 3:06 of the period to take a 4-1 lead into the second.

The Wilton lead grew to 7-1 with two goals by Reid Melillo and one by Brendan Devane midway through the second quarter. The Bears closed the gap with a man-advantage goal and an equal-strength score to end the first half down 7-3.

Norwalk then scored with 8:25 left in the third quarter to tighten the score at 7-4, before the Warriors scored six unanswered goals over a span of seven minutes to take control with a 13-4 lead.

“It’s good to get a win to open the season. We’re still learning who we are and what works and what doesn't," said Wilton head coach John Wiseman. “We showed good movement on offense, putting ourselves in position to get good looks at the net.

"The defense was solid. We need to play better as a team when we’re a man down," added Wiseman. "If we play as a team and help each other out, we should be competitive. (RJ) Romeo had a great game in the face-off circle, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves; it's just the first game.”

Romeo, a sophomore who is replacing Ted Ottens, won 20 of 24 face-offs in his first varsity start.

Melillo finished the game with a hat trick to lead the Wilton scoring. Devane, Baird, Garbus and Lynch had two goals each, and Jack Dexter, Romeo, Mike Brown and Harrison Bardwell all added one goal apiece.

Baird also had five assists on the night.

Norwalk was led by Zack Grimm, who had a hat trick for the Bears.

Jameson Hill started in goal for Wilton, and Josh Worley minded the net in the second half.
