After losing for the first time this season to Trumbull last Friday, the Wilton High boys basketball team rebounded nicely with a 74-53 win over Trinity Catholic on Tuesday night at the Zeoli Field House.
The victory pushes the Warriors' record to 6-1 (4-1 in the FCIAC).
Senior co-captains Matt Shifrin and Scott Shouvlin led the Warriors with 20 points each. Two three-point baskets by each player late in the first quarter put Wilton on the road to victory following a slow start.
Trinity got out to an 11-2 lead as the Wilton defense was allowing the Crusaders easy baskets in the paint. Wilton maintained its composure, though, and went on a 15-0 run.
Shouvlin’s second consecutive three-pointer tied the game at 11-11 with 3:17 left in the period. Next up was Shifrin, who hit back-to-back three-pointers the next two times down the floor to widen the lead to 17-11. Jack Williams then got into the action with a three-pointer of his own to close the quarter with the Warriors ahead, 20-13.
Trinity closed the gap to 20-17 to start the second quarter, but the Warriors quickly rebounded and pushed their lead to double digits. Wilton was ahead 36-24 at the half.
Another Shouvlin three-pointer to end the third quarter gave the hosts a 59-33 lead heading into the final eight minutes. Wilton outscored Trinity, 23-9, in the third quarter. The highlight of the game came when Jack Williams drove the lane and seemed to be suspended in mid-air as he took a shot that went off the glass for a basket.
The Crusaders cut slightly into the Wilton lead in the final quarter, getting to within 14 points before Shouvlin contributed two baskets and a free throw to put the game on ice.
Wilton won easily despite attempting just eight free throws and making four of them. Trinity was just seven of 22 from the line.
Wilton travels to Westport this Friday night to take on the Staples Wreckers. The Warriors defeated the Wreckers, 83-66, in a non-conference game during the recent Wilton Holiday Tournament.
