Track: Wilton qualifies 29 for FCIAC championships

The Wilton High indoor track and field team has 29 individual qualifiers for today's FCIAC championships at 4 at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.

The Wilton team qualified 17 girls and 12 boys for the meet, in addition to multiple relay teams.

The meet will be broadcast live on the HAN Network. Coverage begins at 4:30.

Leading the way for the Wilton boys is senior Chris Colbert, who has run the fastest time in the FCIAC this winter in the 300 meters (35.36). The time is the second fastest in the state this season, and also a Wilton High indoor track record.

For the Wilton girls, senior Covadaonga Perez Pelaez has the second-best throw in the shot put among FCIAC qualifiers, with a 33’11” that is also a WHS indoor record.

Also for the WHS girls, freshman Shelby Dejana qualified for FCIACs in four events — the 55 meters, 300 meters, 55-meter hurdles and high jump.

Senior Lacey Eller, junior Andreen Reid and freshman Maureen Campbell all qualified in two events.

On the boys side, freshman Wooder Thoby qualified in three events — the 55 meters, long jump and high jump. Junior Tyler Daher and sophomore Ryan Healey both qualified in two events.

Morgan McCormick, the reigning FCIAC and State Open champ in the 3200 meters, was not able to qualify for FCIACs due to an injury that sidelined her for the early part of the indoor season. She is expected to run on the Wilton 4x800 and sprint medley relays.

Coach Jeff Gee is looking for all four Wilton girls relay teams to medal.

On the boys side, the 4x400 relay team of  Tyler Daher, Grant Jones, James Sweeney and Samuel Mangino is seeded sixth based on its time of 3:39.4 at the Yale Invitational.
