A late interception deep in Staples' territory helped the hosts hold on for a 14-7 victory over the Wilton High football team Friday night in Westport.

With under a minute to play, defensive back Bobby Jacowleff intercepted Wilton quarterback Brett Phillips' pass on the Staples four-yard line to secure the win.

Staples (1-1), the reigning FCIAC champs and Class LL finalist, took a 14-0 lead before Phillips scored on a nine-yard run with 1:07 left in the first half.

Following an interception by TJ Savvides on the Staples eight-yard line, Wilton (1-1) missed a 26-yard field goal attempt at the end of the second quarter.

Neither team scored in the second half.
