Softball: Wilton downs Danbury with six-run seventh
Sage Zunda pitched a four-hit shutout to lead the Wilton High softball team to a 6-0 non-conference win over Danbury on Wednesday in Danbury.
The Warriors (2-0) broke a scoreless tie with six runs in the top of the seventh, keyed by doubles by freshmen Claire Wilson and Maya Farrell.
Zunda, who struck out five and walked one, retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh.
Danbury’s Alyna Bellantoni had allowed only three hits through six innings, before the Warriors exploded in the top of the seventh for six hits and six runs.
Zunda started the rally with a lead-off walk, and moved to third on Wilson’s double. Farrell broke the tie with a two-run double, and after an infield hit by Iso Casiraghi, scored on an RBI single by Pippa Gosden. That was followed by a two-run single by Eliza Ward and RBI single by Sophia Strazza.
For the game, Casiraghi went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored and Gosden went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Strazza was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI. Ward was 1-for-3 with a walk and 2 RBI. Wilson doubles and scored, while Farrell had a double, 2 RBI and one run scored.
The Hatters fell to 1-1 with the loss.
