Skiing: Wilton girls sweep, boys split

Placing its six scoring skiers in the top-23 overall, the Wilton High girls ski team continued its strong start to the 2014 season on Tuesday at Mount Southington.

In a meet that was rescheduled from last Wednesday, the Warriors had a team time of 308.98 seconds to sweep Lauralton Hall (382.92), Westbook (disqualified), Cheshire (323.38) and Glastonbury (328.85) and improve their record to 12-1.

Wilton’s Haley Howard was first overall in a field of 79 skiers with a two-run combined time of 48.74 seconds.

Angele Poirier (49.66) and Genevieve Poirier (50.85) also were in the top 10 as they finished sixth and 10th, respectively.

CC Babchak (13th, 51.60), Margaret May (19th, 53.59) and Hannah Sullivan (23rd, 54.54) also contributed to Wilton’s team time.

The Wilton boys had a team time of 298.25 seconds and split its six head-to-head contests.

The Warriors (11-6) got wins over Berlin, St. Luke’s and Westbrook, which were all disqualified, but lost to Cheshire (288.64), Fairfield Prep (281.84) and Glastonbury (289.50).

Will Howard was Wilton’s top finisher, placing 26th overall in a two-run time of 48.11 seconds.

He was followed by Emmanuel Sitinas (48.36) in 32nd place, Jody Underwood (48.43) in a tie for 33rd place, Zach Verrelli (48.50) in 36th place, Josh Reeve (52.27) in 54th place, and Roger Hueglin (52.58) in 55th place.
