Placing its six scoring racers in the top-36 overall, the Wilton High girls ski team defeated five of seven head-to-head opponents in the second meet of the season last Thursday at Mt. Southington.

The Warriors had a team time of 317.13 seconds to edge Southington (318.78) by slightly more than one second. Wilton also got wins over Daniel Hand (364.69), Danbury (422.54), Weston (324.30), and Guilford (disqualified).

The two teams beating Wilton were Greenwich (312.15) and Ridgefield (312.22), which were first and second overall, respectively, out of the 13 teams on the mountain.

Wilton’s top finisher was Haley Howard, who finished second overall (for the second straight race) with a two-run combined time of 48.57 seconds. She trailed only Westbrook’s Anna Schneider, who was first in a time of 48.23.

Howard a faster first run (24.76) than Schneider (24.80), but Schneider’s second-run time of 23.43 was better than Howard’s 23.81.

Genevieve Poirier added another top-10 finish for the Warriors, as she placed ninth overall in a two-run time of 50.36 seconds. Poirier’s second run (24.28) was the sixth fastest of the day.

Wilton’s third finisher was Julia Bonnist, who was 19th overall in a time of 52.26. She was followed by tightly bunched teammates Emma Fortuna (55.21), Hannah Jung (55.28) and Anna Wright (55.45), who were 34th, 35th and 36th, respectively.

Although they didn’t contribute to Wilton’s team time, Devon Thompson (42nd, 56.47) and Emily O’Brien (49th, 57.07) also finished in the top-50 overall out of a total field of 102 skiers.

The Wilton boys team also won more than it lost, beating four of its seven head-to-head opponents.

The Warriors’ team time of 318.99 seconds gave them triumphs over Southington (327.00), Daniel Hand (337.56), Guilford (366.28) and Danbury (383.40). Wilton’s losses came to Greenwich (302.85), Ridgefield (310.73) and Weston (314.52).

Patrick Verrelli led the Warriors with a 26th-place overall finish in a two-run combined time of 51.39 seconds.

Wilton’s next four finishers were all in the top-50 overall, as Michael Hueglin (52.99) placed 36th, Mike LoGiourto (53.31) 41st, August Theoharides (53.40) 44th, and Nathan Reznik (53.70) 48th.

Close behind was Alexander Killian (54.20), who completed Wilton’s team time with a 51st-place finish.
