Ski preview: Wilton teams look strong

With a mix of talented returnees and promising newcomers, the Wilton High boys and girls ski teams will enter the 2014 season with lofty goals.

“Both teams look strong,” said Wilton head coach Rob Perry. “They could both be among the top teams in Class S and the state.”

After placing fourth at last season’s State Open meet, the Wilton girls look poised for even better things this winter. Nearly all of the Warriors’ top skiers return, including seniors Angele Poirier, Margaret May and Hannah Sullivan, junior CC Babchak, and sophomores Haley Howard and Genevieve Poirier.

Angele Poirier led the Warriors at the state championship, finishing 10th overall. Howard was 12th and Genevieve Poirier 23rd.

“The girls team has been making progress,” said Perry. “They are looking to take another step this season.”

The Wilton boys team was hit harder by graduation, losing three of its top-six racers in Sean Roberts, Wyatt Lillie and John Williams.

But back are seniors Roger Hueglin and Emmanuel Sitinas and junior Will Howard, all of whom factored in Wilton’s team time at the State Open, in which the Warriors finished fifth. Hueglin led Wilton with a third-place overall finish at that meet, earning All-State honors. Howard was 21st and Sitinas 51st.

They are joined by seniors Jack Dexter, Jody Underwood and Payton Wertz, and juniors Kieran Kehoe and Ethan Michael. Both Underwood and Dexter competed for the Warriors at last year’s state championship.

Perry said the boys team will also benefit from the arrival of several skilled freshmen.

“There is a lot of new talent,” he said. “Some of the new skiers are USSA racers and have good experience.”

Notes: The Wilton boys went undefeated in the Class S conference last season, placing first. The Wilton girls were second in Class S.

Angele Poirier, Haley Howard and Roberts earned All-State honorable mention honors in 2013.

Wilton is scheduled to open the season today at Mt. Southington.
