Relays lead Wilton at State Open swim meet

With its three relays accounting for most of the scoring, the Wilton High boys swim team ended its season with a 26th-place finish at the State Open championship meet Saturday at Yale University in New Haven.

The Warriors had 53 points, three more than 27th-place Haddam-Killingworth.

All but seven of Wilton’s points came in the relay races. Providing the best finish was the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Ryan Robb, Jack Lewis, Derek Benison and Will Suchy, which placed 12th in a time of 1:31.38.

Harrison McCool, Lewis, Christian Larsen and Benison were 21st in the 200 medley relay (1:44.50), and Robb, McCool, Larsen and Suchy finished 21st in the 400 freestyle relay (3:25.11).

Suchy added points in two individual events, as he placed 21st in the 200 freestyle (1:49.66) and 23rd in the 500 freestyle (5:01.93).

Benison supplied Wilton’s lone remaining point by finishing 24th in the 50 freestyle in a time of 22.99 seconds.

Notes: Greenwich won its third straight State Open title with 658 points. Ridgefield was a distant second with 311.5 points.

Fifty-four teams scored points at the meet.

Wilton was 23rd at last year’s State Open with 73 points.
