Postponement benefits Wilton baseball team for FCIAC final

Although it had the day off, the Wilton High baseball team received a competitive advantage on Thursday.
The FCIAC semifinal game between Staples and Trinity Catholic, rained out on Wednesday and moved to today, has once again been postponed — this time due to the threat of thunderstorms later this afternoon and tonight.
Those teams will now play on Friday at 5 at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, with the winner then immediately having to face Wilton in the conference championship game at 7.
Wilton, the fifth-seed in the FCIAC playoffs, booked its first trip to the finals in 16 seasons by beating top-seed Darien, 5-1, in the first semifinal Wednesday at Harbor Yard. The second semifinal between second-seed Staples and sixth-seed Trinity was supposed to take place afterwards but was postponed due to rain.
Wilton is seeking its first FCIAC title since 1995, when it beat Greenwich in the championship game. The Warriors also won the conference title back in 1977.
Wilton lost in the championship game in 1990 and 1994 and, most recently, in 1999.
The Warriors defeated fourth-seed Norwalk, 6-1, in the quarterfinals on Tuesday before beating Darien in the semifinals Wednesday.
As of 10:45 a.m., all other conference tournament contests on Thursday are on as scheduled. Any changes will be updated at as soon as they become available.
