McCormick wins Class L title, Wilton girls qualify for Open
Morgan McCormick continued a historic season on Saturday as she successfully defended her Class L cross country championship.
The Wilton High senior finished the 5K course at Wickham Park in a time of 18:19, beating runnerup Katherine Wiser of Pomperaug by 16 seconds. McCormick and Wiser were the only two runners in the six girls class championship races to go under 19 minutes.
McCormick lowered her time from last year’s Class L meet by 31 seconds. Her time was the eighth fastest at Wickham Park since the new course was established in 2008.
She broke her own Class L meet record of 18:50, and also broke her team record for Wickham Park of 18:43, set at last year’s State Open.
Pomperaug won the team title, with four of the top eight finishers and 37 points. Guilford was second with 83 points, followed by Wilton (103), E.O. Smith (117) and Cheshire (131).
Wilton, which had the eighth best team time of the six class meets, qualified for the State Open next Friday, also at Wickham Park.
Emily Welch was Wilton’s second finisher, taking 12th overall in 20:49 to earn all-state honors.
Paula Perez Pelaez was 18th overall in 21:17, followed by Eliza Snyder (34th, 21:55), Claire Kedzierski (38th, 22:02), Carly Sullivan (88th, 23:36) and Erin Sweeney (91st, 23:43).
