Gymnastics: Warriors set season high in consecutive meets

After turning in its best performance of the season last Tuesday, and still suffering a painfully close five-hundredths of a point loss to Fairfield Ludlowe, the Wilton High gymnastics team came back on Thursday with another season-best effort.

The Warriors went from 136.25 on Tuesday to 136.3 on Thursday — beating its season average going into the week by eight points.

Wilton’s average is now up to 131.3, putting the Warriors fourth in the state rankings behind Woodstock Academy (146.3), New Milford (133.5) and Daniel Hand (132.7), but ahead of FCIAC rivals Darien (130.5) and Ludlowe (128.9)

The team’s season best going into this week was 133.95 on Jan. 16, but Wilton easily topped that on Tuesday with a score of 136.25. Ludlowe pulled out the win with a score of 136.3.

The Warriors had season-high scores on bars (34.1) and beam (34.0), and tied their season best on vault (33.95). The floor score (34.2) was the second best of the season.

Season-best vaults were performed by Meredith Nash (8.6), Riley Wadehra (8.5) and Alex Uriarte (8.45), while all six performers on bars — Wadehra (8.55), Izzy Meltzer (8.55), Uriarte (8.5), Catie Jones (8.5), Morgan Leddy (8.4) and Sam Farhi (8.3) — had season-best scores.

The beam effort saw season-best scores by Leddy (8.8), Uriarte (8.8), Meltzer (8.6), Nash (8.0) and Jones (7.8), while Leddy tied her season-best on floor (8.7), and Nash had her second-best floor score of the season with a 9.0.

In the all-around, Leddy (34.2) and Uriarte (33.9) both had their highest scores this season.

On Thursday at home, the Warriors set a new season-best score with a 136.3, easily beating Joel Barlow and Weston to improve its season record to 7-3.

Wilton had its best performance of the season on vault, with a 34.95, with season-best scores by Nash (8.9), Sara Posson (8.8), Rebecca Poirier (8.7) and Uriarte (8.55).

Riley turned in another season-best 8.55 on bars to lead the team, while Leddy had a season-best 9.0 on beam to top all scorers. On vault, Nash again turned in her second-best effort of the season with a 9.05.
