Good start, treys lead Wilton boys hoop past Staples

When the Wilton High boys basketball team faced Staples in a non-conference contest during the former's holiday tournament, the Wreckers went toe-to-toe with Wilton for three quarters before the Warriors pulled away for an 83-66 win.

So in Friday's night conference rematch in Westport, Wilton was looking to get out to an early lead. That’s just what the visitors did, riding a strong start to a 58-44 victory over Staples.

Wilton, which led 29-19 at halftime, raised its record to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the conference. The loss dropped Staples to 4-4.

The Warriors used three-pointers to fuel the victory, as their two leading scorers — Michael Bingaman (19 points) and Scott Shouvlin (15 points) — drained five three-pointers each.

Matt Shifrin added 12 points for Wilton.

For Staples, Nick Esposito had 14 points and Justin Seidman added 11 points.
