Girls tennis: Wilton doubles teams advance at Open

The Wilton High girls tennis team has two doubles team still alive in the State Open tournament, which resumes today at Yale University in New Haven.

The Warriors’ top doubles team, Taylor Ingerman and Kaitlyn Zheng, is the defending state champ and seeded number one for this year’s tourney.

Ingerman and Zheng opened with a pair of 8-0 wins in the first two rounds, held at Hall High School in West Hartford on Saturday. They face Madeline Montenegro and Claire Dinauer of Guilford in the round of 16 today.

Wilton’s number-two doubles team, Ally Shay and Bridget Cott, was unseeded but advanced to the third round as both opponents forfeited in the first two rounds, including the third seed from Staples.

The had defeated a team from Hall High School in the opening round, 8-0.

Cott and Shay play 14th-seeded Anna Barsanti and Catherine Hatfield of Darien today.

The doubles tourney will continue through the quarterfinals today, with the semifinals on Tuesday and finals on Wednesday, both at Yale.

Maddi Stow, who was seeded fourth in the State Open singles tourney, had to forfeit her first match due to injury.
