Girls lacrosse: Darien rips Warriors, 14-7

The Darien High girls lacrosse team came into Wilton on Friday as the only undefeated team in the FCIAC, and the Blue Wave left that way with a convincing 14-7 win over the Warriors.

Darien (8-0 FCIAC, 11-3 overall) jumped out to a 5-0 lead 11 minutes into the game, and were up at halftime 8-2 when Laura Murphy scored on a free position with just six seconds left.

Wilton came out strong to start the second half but Darien goalie Samantha Nielsen, who was stellar all game, made three quick saves to thwart the Warriors.

Wilton finally broke through with a goal by Sara Dickinson, but the Blue Wave answered with goals by Murphy, Anna Moorhead, Katherine Cronin and Mariah Matheis to quickly squash any Wilton hopes, making it 12-3 with 13:32 left.

Wilton dropped to 9-5 overall, and 7-4 in the FCIAC.

"We just didn't execute our game plan today and we had too many turnovers, and that's what cost us. We can't turn the ball over against Darien. They'll make you pay," said Wilton Head Coach Meredith Meyran. "You have to maintain your composure because they're going to make the most of every opportunity they get, so you have to make sure you're doing the same on your end."

The Warriors finished the game with 13 turnovers.

Moorhead led the Darien scoring with three goals, with two goals each by Matheis, Kaeleigh Morrill, Cronin, Chandler Kirby and Murphy. Elizabeth Fucigna also scored.

Nielsen had eight saves in goal.

For Wilton, Makenna Pearsall scored three goals and had nine draw controls.

Dickinson had two goals and Laine Parsons had one goal and one assist. Eva Greco also scored.

Olivia Phelan finished with seven saves in goal.

Paisley Eagan had four draw controls and two caused turnovers for Wilton, while Parsons had an interception and one caused turnovers.

Campbell Gulbin and Sydney Brant each had two groundballs and one draw control each.

Dickinson and Rebecca Wistreich each had one groundball.

Greco, Cecily Freliech and Casey Tucker had one caused turnover each.
