Girls hoop: Brosko-led Wilton routs New Milford in opener

In its first game since winning a state championship last March, the new-look Wilton High girls basketball team routed an inferior opponent.

The Warriors, who graduated four of five starters from their Class LL champion squad, rolled to a 59-18 victory over host New Milford in the season opener for both teams Friday night.

Wilton scored the first nine points of the game and led 14-3 after one quarter. New Milford closed within 16-8 early in the second period, but the Warriors then went on a 15-1 run to open a 31-9 lead and were not threatened the rest of the way.

Senior Karen Brosko, the lone returning starter from last season, had 19 points to single-handedly outscore New Milford. Sophomore Claire Gulbin added 11 points, hitting three three-pointers.

Notes: New Milford finished with an 8-13 record last season, losing to top-seed South Windsor, 69-24, in the first round of the Class LL tournament. Wilton, which was 25-2 in 2014-15, beat South Windsor in the state finals.

Wilton's next game is its home opener: Monday at 7 p.m. against Westhill.
