Darien overwhelms Wilton football team, 48-7

Any thoughts that unbeaten Darien might be uninspired against a young Wilton football team were quickly dispelled.

Scoring its first touchdown on its third play from scrimmage, Darien breezed to a 48-7 victory over the host Warriors on Friday night at Tom Fujitani Field.

The Blue Wave (6-0) opened a 41-0 halftime lead before playing their reserves for nearly all of the final two quarters.

Wilton's lone score came in the fourth quarter, as back-up quarterback Brian Calabrese ran 21 yards for a touchdown.

By that time, though, the outcome was etched in stone. Darien lived up to its reputation during a dominant first half, which featured five touchdown passes from quarterback Timmy Graham.

Graham hit Colin Minicus on a nine-yard scoring strike and then connected with Max Grant on a 34-yard TD pass to give Darien a quick 14-0 lead. Shelby Grant's one-yard touchdown run stretched Darien's lead to 21-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The onslaught continued with three more touchdowns in the second quarter — all on passes from Graham. Minicus (55 yards), Hudson Hamill (one yard) and Max Grant (five yards) were on the receiving end of Graham's scoring tosses.

Darien's only miscue was a missed extra point, as the visitors went into halftime ahead, 41-0.

Following a scoreless third quarter, Calabrese got Wilton (2-5) on the board with his touchdown run. Will Sullivan's extra point made it 41-7 before Darien ended the scoring with Brian Peters' 14-yard TD pass to Matt Maignan.

Notes: Wilton now gets its bye week before returning to action on Friday, Nov. 13, at Danbury. Kick-off is 7 p.m.
