Cunningham helps Wilton girls crush St. Joseph

Senior Erin Cunningham scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Wilton High girls basketball team to a 64-35 victory over host St. Joseph on Wednesday night in Trumbull.

The win was the 14th straight for the Warriors, who are now 14-1 overall.

Wilton used a strong second half to turn a close game into a rout. The Warriors led 19-15 after the first quarter and carried a 28-24 lead into halftime. The visitors outscored the Cadets, 22-8, in the third quarter and 14-3 in the fourth to pull away.

Haley English and Christina Holmgren each chipped in with 12 points for the Warriors and Erica Meyer added nine points.

Cunningham and Holmgren both grabbed seven rebounds, while Makenna Pearsall had five assists and four rebounds and English had five steals.

Wilton has now defeated five FCIAC teams that are currently among the top eight in the conference's overall standings. Wilton has beaten these five teams (Ridgefield, Greenwich, Trumbull, Stamford, and St. Joseph) by an average of 22 points.

Wilton has yet to play Darien (7-5), currently seeded eighth, and Fairfield Warde (12-1), the top seed right now. The Warriors face Darien next Monday at home and close the regular season against Warde, again at home, on Wednesday, Feb. 18.
