Cross country: Wilton's McCormick wins State Open

Morgan McCormick became Wilton High School’s first-ever State Open cross country champion, as the junior won the girls Open race on Friday afternoon at Wickham Park in Manchester.

McCormick completed the 5K course in a time of 18:43 to edge out Hayley Collins of Tolland by two seconds. She has now won FCIAC, Class L and State Open championships.

Emily Welch was the next finisher for Wilton, placing 68th overall in 20:48.

She was followed by Elizabeth Lynch (101s, 21:13), Erika Bonnist (111th, 21:20), Meaghan Downey (129th, 21:41), Elizabeth Healy (142nd, 21:56) and Nina Mellin (157th, 22:16) to round out Wilton’s effort.

The Warriors finished eighth as a team. Ridgefield won the State Open title with 122 points, beating defending champ Tolland by eight points.
