Cross country: WHS girls third in Class L, Hoelzl takes second
The Wilton High girls cross country team finished third at Saturday's Class L state championships, held at Wickham Park in Manchester, and earned a spot in next Friday's State Open meet at a team.
The Wilton boys team was sixth at the meet, led by a second-place performance by Justin Hoelzl, who finished the 5K course in a time of 16:29, just four seconds behind race winner Michael Stoker of South Windsor.
Hoelzl qualified for the State Open along with teammate Aaron Breene, who placed seventh in the Class L meet in a time of 16:43.
The Wilton girls were paced by Mary Lynch, who was fourth in a time of 19:33, and Morgan McCormick, who was 13th in 20:31.
Elizabeth Lynch finished 22nd in a time of 20:51, followed by Erika Bonnist (25th, 20:57), Nina Mellin (37th, 21:33), Lilla Seymour (48th, 22:15) and Meaghan Downey (49th, 22:17).
Rounding out the effort for the Wilton boys team were Connor Drake (46th, 18:05), Flynn Crowther (78th, 18:51), Patrick Moore (89th, 19:08), Luke Maloney (102nd, 19:22) and Erik Danvers (119th, 19:53).
Mary Lynch, Hoelzl and Breene all earned all-Class L honors for finishing in the top 12.
The State Open will be held on Friday at Wickham Park. The girls race is scheduled for 2 and the boys trace for 2:45. The top six teams and top 25 individual finishers from each race will qualify for the New England championships on Saturday, Nov. 14, at Thetford Academy in Thetford, Vt.
