Coming off her decisive win at the recent FCIAC championships, Wilton’s Morgan McCormick was even more dominant at Saturday’s Class L cross country state championship at Wickham Park in Manchester.
The junior won state title in a time of 18:50 for the 5K course, beating runner-up Bridgid Selfors of Mercy High School by 51 seconds. She is only the third Wilton runner to win a state girls cross country title.
The Warriors finished second at the meet with 103 points. Pomperaug was the team champ with 62 points.
Wilton qualified as a team for next Friday’s State Open, also at Wickham Park.
Sophomore Emily Welch turned in a big performance as she placed 10th in a time of 20:25.
Also finishing in the top 20 were Elizabeth Healy (24th, 21:19) and Elizabeth Lynch (26th, 21:23). Rounding out the effort were Erika Bonnist (42nd, 21:47), Meaghan Downey (47th, 22:03) and Carly Sullivan (52nd, 22:09).
The Wilton boys finished 15th, led by Connor Drake (65th, 18:25) and Luke Maloney (69th, 18:31).
James Steward was the team’s third finisher, placing 86th overall (18:54), followed by Flynn Crowther (97th, 19:09), Carsten Langholm (113th, 19:22), Tyler Zengo (123rd, 19:41) and Sean Cunningham (153rd, 20:38).
