Cross country: Hoelzl, Lynch are race winners

Wilton had the winners of both the boys and girls races at Tuesday’s cross country meet at Allen’s Meadow, during a meet against Fairfield Warde, Brien McMahon and Bridgeport Central.

Justin Hoelzl continued to run strong, taking first place in the boys race with a time of 16:21 for the 3.15-mile course.

For the Wilton High girls, Mary Lynch also continued her winning ways, taking first place in a time of 15:34 for the 2.5-mile course.

Morgan McCormick was second in the girls race in 15:53, as the Warriors had nine of the top 12 finishers to beat Warde, 23-26, along with Central and McMahon, which did not have enough runners to score.

Rounding out the team’s top seven were Erika Bonnist (fifth, 16:46), Elizabeth Healy (seventh, 16:54), Meaghan Downey (eighth, 16:57), Lilla Seymour (ninth, 17:02) and Nina Mellin (tenth, 17:04). Also placing in the top 20 overall were Emma Snyder (11th, 17:13), Elizabeth Lynch (12th, 17:18), Katherine Williams (17th, 18:01) and Devin Moore (18th, 18:28).

The Wilton girls improved their season record to 11-2, with one meet left before the FCIAC championships on Oct. 21 at Waveny Park in New Canaan.

The Wilton boys scored wins over Central, 15-50, and McMahon, 24-33, on Tuesday, but lost to Warde by the score of 20-43.

After Hoelzl, Wilton’s next finisher was Connor Drake, who was tenth in a time of 18:16. He was followed by Patrick Moore (14th, 18:43), Flynn Crowther (16th, 19:05), Sean Cunningham (18th, 19:27), Erik Danvers (21st, 19:50) and Luke Maloney (22nd, 20:11) to round out the team’s top seven.

The Wilton boys team is now 7-6 on the season, with only next Tuesday's race at Greenwich Point left on the regular-season schedule.
