Boys tennis: Wilton notches first win over Greenwich in years
The Wilton High boys tennis team wasted little time in making a statement for the 2016 season, scoring its first win over Greenwich in memory, maybe ever, with a 5-2 decision on Monday at home.
The Warriors (2-0) had gone winless against the Cardinals going back to at least the 1980s, during which time Greenwich has won 16 FCIAC titles.
“It was a pretty special day,” said head coach Chris Damone. “I know in my 20 years I coached in Ridgefield and Wilton now, I’ve never seen Wilton beat Greenwich, so that’s huge. And we beat them pretty easily, which was ever more impressive.”
The win came right after the Wilton girls pulled out the final match in a 4-3 win over Greenwich, also on the WHS courts.
“It was a great day for Wilton tennis,” said Damone. “I challenged the kids to stay in the present and battle for every point. They stayed focused.”
Monday’s win came after a 5-2 win last Friday over defending Class M state champ Weston.
“It’s going to be a good year,” Damone said. “We’re deep and we’re young. We can make some noise this year.”
Four freshmen started for Wilton on Monday.
At first singles, freshman Nick Condos served notice to the rest of the FCIAC with an easy 6-1, 6-1 win over Henry Decoster.
“Nick Condos is something special, following in the footsteps of Noah Farrell and dominating at number one,” said the coach.
Quentin Thouvenot at second singles, Alex Hattenbach at fourth singles, and Jay Cassone at fifth singles also won in straight sets.
The Wilton first doubles team, returning senior Jordan Lord and freshman Henry Murphy, also had a convincing win — and is shaping up to be a formidable duo.
“My number one doubles is a team to be reckoned with,” said Damone.
