Boys tennis: Wilton doubles teams advance

Three Wilton doubles teams made it through the first two rounds of the Class L boys tennis tournament, which continues today at Yale University.

The Warriors’ top two singles players, senior captains Ian Erickson and Gerrit Gaillard, are paired up as a doubles teams for states, earning the top seed in the tourney.

After a first-round bye, they cruised to the third round by sweeping Matt Cox and Colin Farrar of RHAM, 6-2, 6-0, last Saturday at Yale.

Wilton’s regular number-one doubles unit, senior Ryan Black and junior captain Jordan Lord, is the sixth seed, having lost only once during the regular season. They advanced through the first two rounds with straight-set wins over Jameson Kenney and Peter Wroblewski of Newington, 6-0, 6-0; and Jackson Inchalik and Milo Roth of Guilford, 6-2, 6-0.

Also advancing to the third round was the doubles team of juniors Nicolas Fiol and Ryan Walsh, who are seeded 14th. They won their first match over Eric Hong and Mike Silbart of E.O. Smith, 6-1 6-0, before winning their second match in a pro-set tiebreaker over Colin Savino and Nicholas Savino of Bristol Central, 6-2, 0-6, 10-8.

Four Wilton players competed in the singles tournament, but all four were ousted on Saturday.

Juniors Alex Hattenbach and Timmy Sullivan, and sophomore Quentin Thouvenot, all made it to the second round.

Hattenbach defeated Tim Breckel of RHAM, 6-,1 6-0, in the first round, but lost to second-seeded Blake Norton of Bunnell in round two, 6-1, 6-1.

Sullivan opened with a straight-set win over Kyle Dopp of Farmington, 6-3, 6-0, before losing to third-seeded Bobby Neuner of Darien, 6-1, 6-1, in the second round.

Thouvenot swept Connor Buckley of Newington in the first round, 6-2, 6-0, but suffered a heartbreaking three-set loss to fifth-seeded Peter Mao of South Windsor in the second round, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 10-8.

Also competing in the singles tournament was junior Timothy Watson, who defeated Grant Anderson of Wethersfield in three sets, 4-6, 6-0, 11-9, in the qualifying round, before falling to top-seeded Evan Powell of Guilford, 6-0, 6-0.
