Billy Black pitched a three-hit shutout as the Wilton High baseball team began the state tournament with a 2-0 road win over 12th-seed Cheshire in a Class LL first-round game Tuesday.

The 21st-seeded Warriors got more good news when 28th-seed Norwich Free Academy upended fifth-seed New Britain, 2-1, in another first-round game on Tuesday. Instead of going on another road trip, Wilton will now host NFA in the second round of the Class LL tournament tomorrow (June 1) at 3:30.

Black limited Cheshire to one double and two singles in his masterful complete-game effort. The junior lefthander struck out seven batters and walked one.

Wilton got the game's only two runs in the top of the sixth. Dillon Lifrieri and Henry Hovland both singled before scoring on Matt D'Elisa's clutch two-run double with two outs.

D'Elisa went three-for-three for the Warriors, who finished with eight hits. Hovland added two hits for Wilton.

Notes: Wilton played without centerfielder Drew Connolly, who suffered a season-ending leg injury in a scrimmage against Stamford last week. Lifrieri moved from shortstop to center to replace Connolly, one of the FCIAC's top defensive outfielders this season.
