After jumping out to a four-run lead, the Wilton Babe Ruth 15U baseball team held on for a 4-3 victory over Fairfield last Thursday at Fairfield Warde High School to win the Eastern Division championship in the I-84 Travel League. Thanks to four early runs and starting pitcher Jack Mastrianna keeping Fairfield in check, Wilton took a 4-0 lead into the sixth inning. But a few well-placed hits and some shaky defense helped Fairfield score three runs and close the gap to 4-3. Noah MacDonald relieved Mastrianna and promptly closed out the inning, preserving the one-run lead through six innings. When Wilton failed to score in the top of the seventh, it took the field in the bottom of the inning with the thinnest of margins and looking to preserve the victory. The bottom of the seventh was not without excitement, as Fairfield put runners on second and third with two outs. With the game on the line, MacDonald got the Fairfield batter to line to shortstop Michael Tienken, who fielded the ball on a short hop and threw to first to record the final out and preserve the championship for Wilton. Wilton had advanced to the finals with a 6-5 triumph over New Fairfield in the semifinals on July 22. The game, played at the Wilton High School junior varsity field, began well enough for Wilton, as it took a 6-0 lead after two-and-a-half innings before heavy rain forced play to be suspended. The contest resumed on Wednesday evening at New Fairfield High School — New Fairfield was the higher seed, but did not have an available field for the Monday game — and the hosts scored five runs to pull within 6-5. But Wilton held on behind a strong, complete-game pitching performance by Kiernan Ursone, who started Monday’s game and finished Wednesday’s, to secure the victory.
