Wilton to face Guilford as part of football challenge

The Wilton High football team will open the next two seasons against an unfamiliar opponent: Guilford.

As part of the new SCC/FCIAC Football Challenge, the two teams will play one another in non-conference games, with each team getting one home game.

The agreement between the conferences, which are arguably the state’s best in football, is possible for the next two seasons because teams will play 11 games, rather than the customary 10.

Guilford finished 5-5 this season and 15th in the Class L state playoff point rankings. Three of Guilford's losses were to teams (Daniel Hand, West Haven, Hillhouse) that qualified for the state playoffs.

Wilton went 4-6 this year, finishing 19th in the Class L point rankings. Three of the Warriors' losses were also against state tourney teams (St. Joseph, New Canaan, Trinity Catholic).

To fill a bye week, Wilton will also play another SCC team, Branford, in Week 3 next season.
