Wilton swimmers help S&CC place third at county meet

The Shore & Country Club swimming and diving team finished its season on Aug. 11 at the Fairfield County championships. Out of the 31 teams that competed in the swim championships, S&CC finished in third place overall.

Last year, S&CC finished in fifth place, and two years ago its finished in ninth place. Third place is the best finish at the county championships in S&CC’s history.

The following S&CC Wilton swimmers broke club records.

Emma Holmquist (girls 14-under) set her first individual record in the 50-meter breaststroke with a time of 37.65. She broke the oldest record on the girls’ side of the board: Jill Rutherford’s record of 37.95 from 1978. She placed fifth in that event.

She also placed sixth in the 100-meter I.M. and seventh in the 50-meter free.

Stephen Holmquist (boys 17-under) broke his own record in the boys 17-under 100-meter I.M. After breaking the record initially at the divisional championships, he lowered his time by a second to set the new record at 1:01.25.

Holmquist also broke the 50-meter backstroke record. His time of 29.29 broke Mike Kupan’s record of 30.10 from 1979. He captured the silver medal in both of the events. He also placed third in the 50-meter breast.

Caroline O’Brien (girls 17-under) broke her own record in the 50-meter butterfly by a half-second to set the new record at 29.88 and took home a bronze. She also broke her own record in the 100-meter I.M. by going a 1:10.75 and came in fourth place. She placed ninth in the 50-meter breaststroke.

This was O’Brien’s last S&CC meet. She has been a dedicated member of the S&CC swim team since she was six-years-old. She currently holds seven S&CC club records and is a four-time county champion.

The boys’ 200-meter freestyle relay team of Lucas Balderrama, Joshue Balderrama, Guido Balderrama and Stephen Holmquist set a new record of 1:58.76 and came in second place. The previous record was set in 2010 with a time of 1:59.99.

Other outstanding S&CC Wilton Swimmers included:

Caroline Hess (girls 10-under) in the medley relay (13th), butterfly (13th) and breaststroke (10th);

Rory Hess (boys 10-under) in the butterfly (fourth) and breaststroke (sixth);

Ellen Holmquist (girls 10-under) in the breaststroke (seventh), I.M. (12th), freestyle (15th) and free relay (sixth);

Mason Molina in the medley relay (fourth), butterfly (eighth), I.M. (fifth) and freestyle (fifth)

For the diving team, Wilton’s Melinda Henesy placed fifth in the girls 14-under 1-meter diving with a score of 180.25 at the diving counties.
