Wilton baseball team blanks Wave, closes in on FCIAC spot
In a late-season meeting between two squads vying for the final spot in the conference playoffs, the Wilton High baseball team routed Darien, 8-0, on Wednesday in Darien.
The Warriors (12-7, 10-7 FCIAC) can now clinch the eighth and final FCIAC playoff berth with a win over New Canaan (15-4) in the regular-season finale on Thursday in Wilton.
In addition to beating Darien (10-9, 9-8 FCIAC), Wilton got a break with Staples' 3-2 loss to Danbury on Wednesday. The Warriors are now one game ahead of Staples, although the Wreckers (11-8, 9-8) hold the tiebreaker over Wilton.
Andrew Jacobson pitched a six-hit shutout for Wilton in the win over Darien. He struck out five and walked none.
The Warriors scored seven of their runs over the third, fourth and fifth innings. Alex Jacobson, Scott Shouvlin and Jordan Prince had two RBIs apiece for Wilton. Ben Rappaport collected four hits and drove in a run, and Ryan Reuther had three hits and an RBI.
