Wilton Legion team to play in state sectionals Saturday

Despite losing eight of its final 10 games, the Wilton Senior American Legion baseball team is still headed to the state tournament.

Wilton (13-14) will play Shelton in a first-round state sectional game Saturday at noon in Shelton. The winner meets Bethel on Sunday at 1 in Bethel.

Wilton finished tied with Westport for the fifth and final state playoff berth in Zone 4 but got the fifth seed on the head-to-head tiebreaker. Wilton won two of three games from Westport during the regular season.

Under this year's revised tournament format, the top-five teams in each of the eight state zones qualified for states. Twenty teams, including Wilton, are in the Southern Division (Zones 2, 3, 4 and 5) and 20 more are in the Northern Division (Zones 1, 6, 7 and 8).
