Wilton Junior Legion team wins second state game

For the second time in two days, the Wilton Junior American Legion 17U baseball team rode an impressive pitching performance to a victory in the state tournament.

Jack Mastrianna held Westbrook to one run on two hits in six and two-thirds innings, leading Wilton to a 2-1 triumph in a second-round game Sunday at Wilton High School.

Wilton, the eighth seed in the Southern Division, will now face top-seed Trumbull on Monday at 4 at Trumbull High. Trumbull, which received byes in the first and second rounds, finished the regular season with a 25-2 record in Zone 4 and swept its three games with Wilton.

One day after Colin Kahal pitched Wilton past Hamden, 2-1, in the first round of the state tournament, Mastrianna delivered another gem on Sunday. Mastrianna kept Westbrook scoreless through the first six innings, before surrendering a lone run in the top of the seventh. Kiernan Ursone came on in relief and got the final two outs for the save.

Wilton scored both of its runs in the same inning — and in similar fashion. Ryan Osgood had bunt single that scored Michael Tienken, and Zach Adams followed with a second bunt single that scored Drew Connolly.
