Swimming: Lewis leads Wilton at FCIAC finals

Jack Lewis had a pair of top-six finishes to highlight the Wilton High boys swimming team’s performance at Sunday’s FCIAC championships in Greenwich.

Lewis, the only Warriors to make an A Final individually, placed fourth in the 50-yard freestyle (22.19) and sixth in the 100-yard freestyle (49.69). He was coming off a season-bests at the prelims in both the 50 free (22:09) and 100 free (48.55).

Also making it back to Sunday, for a B Final, was Rory Hess, who placed 11th in the 100-yard butterfly. His time of 54:01 was a season best by 2.59 seconds.

The Warriors, who were eighth in the team standings, also finaled in all three relays.

The best result came in the 200-yard freestyle relay, as the team of Alex Li, Jackson Dill, James Steward and Kevin Hu finished sixth with a season-best time of 1:35.52.

Wilton’s 200 medley relay (Nate Snyder, Lewis, Hess, Dill) finished seventh with a season-best 1:43.42; and the 400 freestyle relay (Steward, Hess, Hu, Lewis) was eighth with a time of 3:28.94 that was about nine seconds lower than their seed time.

Many Wilton swimmers competing at the prelims last week turned in season-best times.

In the 200 freestyle, Matt Schaller, Maxwell Downing and Nathaniel Newcomer all had season bests.

In the 200 IM, Hess lowered his best time by more than four seconds to place 17th, and Hu had a best time by nearly three and a half seconds to finish 18th. Ryan Looney was 20th with a season best (by more than five seconds), and Dylan Flanagan lowered his best time by more than three seconds.

In the 50 free, Alex Li and Dill both had season-best times, while Steward, Matt Lamanna and Snyder all had best times in the 100 butterfly. Snyder lowered his time by two and a half seconds.

In the 100 freestyle, Dill lowered his best time by .64 of a second.

Best times in the 500 free were recorded by Hu (drop of more than four seconds), Downing (drop of 7.34 second) and Newcomer.

In the 100 backstroke, Looney lowered his best time by more than a second, while Snyder and Will Trentos (a drop of 1.67 seconds) also had best times.

Dylan Flanagan dropped his best time in the 100 breaststroke by nearly two seconds. Alex Li, Jason Cai and Christopher Zhou also had season-best times.
