John Salvatore, a former goalie for the University of Connecticut men's soccer team and the owner of the Wilton-based Soccer Extreme training program, has been named the head coach coach of the Wilton High girls soccer team.

Salvatore replaces Megan Rodriguez, who did not have her contract renewed following the 2012 season.

"Two years ago, when we were looking for a coach, he (Salvatore) stepped forward," said Wilton High Athletic Director Christy Hayes. "But he didn't have a Connecticut coaching certificate. We probably would have hired him then if he had the certificate, to be honest.

"Now he is certified, and he emerged as the best candidate from a field of five finalists," added Hayes. "He has a vast amount of experience and knows the community. We think he is going to do a great job and be here for a while."

Salvatore, who founded Soccer Extreme while he was still in college, later played for the Connecticut Wolves professional team and also coached at Hartford and Yale.

Soccer Extreme has overseen preseason camps in Wilton during the past few years.
