O'Brien pitches Wilton Junior Legion past Trumbull

The Wilton Junior American Legion baseball team's post-season motto? Have pitching will advance.

Behind a third straight dominating pitching performance in as many days, Wilton got its biggest win of the state tournament so far by beating Trumbull, 3-0, on Monday in Trumbull.

With the victory, Wilton advances to the four-team regional portion of the Southern Division state tournament in Bethel on Wednesday against an opponent to be determined.

On Monday, Glenn O'Brien pitched a two-hit shutout as Wilton (20-10) eliminated Zone 4 champion Trumbull, the top seed in the Southern Division. Trumbull (25-3), which received byes in the first and second round, had easily swept a three-game series from Wilton during the regular season.

But O'Brien kept Trumbull at bay Monday, allowing just two singles while walking one and striking out four.

He got all the run support he would need in the fourth inning when Jack Stevenson came through with an RBI single to give Wilton a 1-0 lead. Wilton added two insurance runs in the seventh, as Zach Adams was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Colin Kahal followed with a sacrifice fly.
