Chelsea LeVander, who as a senior helped the Wilton High gymnastics team defend its FCIAC championship by winning her third straight conference all-around title last winter, has been named the Wilton Sports Person of the Year for 2012.

LeVander, who graduated from Wilton High in June, was among the 15 area winners announced Tuesday by the Fairfield County Sports Commission. The local honorees will be recognized at the 8th annual Sports Night awards dinner, Monday, Oct. 15, at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich at 6 p.m..

In each of the 15 communities that the Commission serves, a committee headed by a local town representative selects a Sports Person of the Year. Each winner is deemed to have had the most positive impact in their sports community from Aug. 2011-Aug. 2012.

LeVander won all four individual events at the FCIAC championships en route to her third consecutive all-around title. It was the second straight year that she finished first in every individual event.

LeVander placed second — for the second straight year — in the all-around at the State Open, finishing second on floor, third in vault and beam, and fourth on bars.

She was then third on floor, fourth in vault, and tied for fifth on bars at the New England championships.

During the regular season, LeVander set a school record in the all-around with a score of 38.4. That included a 9.95 on bars.

In addition to LeVander, the other Sports Persons of the Year were:

BRIDGEPORT - James Campbell, Stony Brook pitcher, Major League Baseball draftee.
