Girls soccer: Wilton ties St. Joseph
In an early season meeting of unbeatens, the Wilton High girls soccer team played St. Joseph to a 1-1 draw Friday afternoon at Kristine Lilly Field.
The Warriors are now 2-0-1 while St. Joseph is 3-0-1.
The teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half, as Wilton had some early chances while the Cadets didn’t penetrate deep into the Warrior offensive zone until midway through the first period.
St Joseph got on the board with a goal 11 minutes and 43 seconds into the second half to take a 1-0 lead.
Wilton, which stepped up its play in the second half, had numerous big-time scoring chances but still couldn’t convert. The missed opportunities included a hit goal post and crossbar.
The Warriors finally broke through when co-captain Casey Pearsall put home a close-range shot, assisted by Jayne Maccio. Lauren Kozakiewicz and Maccio worked hard to get the ball up the field past several defenders to Pearsall, who finished the play.
Action was end to end in the second half, and Wilton goalie Liz Forster came up with several huge saves to keep her team in the game. Forster finished with four saves in the game, including a diving save on a breakaway with 17 minutes left to play to hold the deficit at 1-0.
